The Science of Down syndrome

by Jeanne ~ July 9th, 2008. Filed under: Down syndrome, General Info, Medical, Science.

This is a scientific look at Down syndrome and new information derived from examining stem cells. In spite of those areas that may assault my sensibilities, I felt it was important to include this video. Be aware that “people first” language is also not a big part of this clip.

UPDATE: Updated to add the following which appears on the YouTube page for this clip:

Scientists have known for some time that Down Syndrome, the most common chromosomal abnormality, is caused by an additional chromosome #21. However, new fetal stem cell research is demonstrating that it is not only the presence of this additional chromosome, but also what the genes are missing, that may impede the development of a Down Syndrome brain.

Just wanted to let you know how inspiring I think this site is! Thanks so much for sharing and giving a voice to people with Down’s.

I use to supervise a person with Down’s and he was my favorite employee not only because he was a hard worker but becasue he was always positive, fun, and caring. He made everyone he met smile and so happy to have had the pleasure of meeting him.

    Thanks again,
    Jen

I can agree with Jen, I believe that we can learn a valuable lesson from the attitudes of many people with down syndrome. My best friend of 14 years younger brother has Downs. It is uplifting to see how unconditionally they seem to love and spread positive energy wherever they go. Sometimes we look at their challenges and feel sorry for them. We never notice their free spirit. It’s an area that so many of us are challenged in.
